American Muslims like Aneelah Afzali of Seattle often present the argument that black slaves brought to America were Muslims. It is likely some were. However, in 1791 the slaves of Haiti revolted against French rule and the plantation owners who were getting rich in the sugar industry. This marked the end of French rule and eventually brought about the abolition of slavery. Now if these slaves were Muslims why is it that Haiti did not become a Muslim country, it became a voodoo colony? Where are the glorious stories about Allah?
My wife and I were part of a medical mission to Haiti in 1989 traveling to some quite remote areas where there was no electricity or running water. Many of the children had never seen white folks before. We saw no sign of Islam anywhere, no mosques, and no Qurans. Under spell of voodoo Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere even after hundreds of Christian missionaries have poured their hearts and souls into these people for generations.
