The
Islamic reaction to pigs borders on swinephobic. In 1838 artist
David Roberts secured permission from Muslim leaders to travel
through the Middle East for the sake of drawing and painting the
ancient biblical sites. In order to paint inside a mosque in Cairo it
was required that he use no brushes made with bristles from the
swine. One common Muslim claim is that eating pork is a major cause
of alcoholism.
